Curriculum
The
course program provided by Allison Academy is designed to follow
the State of Florida Guidelines for Curriculum and to use
state adopted textbooks to meet the objective of obtaining a high
school diploma and of preparing students for higher education -
college, university, or technical/vocational institutions. Graduates
from the academy are recognized by leading universities.
"I
came from Brazil just a year ago and I was having difficulty with
English," said Clodyne Teixeira, who graduated
as the valedictorian with a 4.0 grade-point-average. "Being
in a small classroom with just a few students and having a family-oriented
environment really helped me to learn English faster and to do
well in school." Clodyne plans to attend the
University of Miami to study international business.
For
grades 9-12, 24 to 28 credits must be taken and passed with a grade
of 60% or higher. The State of Florida requires 24 credits for high
school graduation. The school's goal is 28 credits.
Electives
In addition to the required courses, the school offers a number
of elective classes such as speech/debate, drama, marketing, journalism,
and photography where students can acquire essential skills. They
also participate in a wide variety of sports - volleyball, basketball,
and baseball - through the regular physical education class. Also,
for those seeking an extra challenge, there is the tennis program
coordinated by the National High School Activities Association,
which gives students the opportunity to compete against other talented
students in numerous schools. The academy offers a golf program
with Coach Mike Moore, a PGA professional, providing both group
and individual instruction for development of skills for golf.
Community
Projects
Involvement in community projects is a must at the academy,
not only to meet state requirements for community service hours
for graduation; but more importantly, to instill empathy for others
and develop citizenship responsibility. Various projects include
The Beach Cleanup, Habitat for Humanity, the Humane Shelter, and
a Nursing Home.
Special Needs
For the students whose needs are not met in the regular curriculum,
the academy offers an alternative program which also meets the State's
minimum standard. These special programs are individually designed
to develop each student's potential.
